Kocchar was born into a well mannered family in Jodhpur, Rajasthan on 17th of November, 1961. She was then raised in Jaipur in the same state. She has a brother and a sister. Her father passed away when she was only 13 years of age and her mother had to take up a job to bring up l three children. Kochhar attended the St. Angela Sophia School which is located in Jaipur city seifl and then relocated to Mumbai for her bachelor’s degree from Jai Hind College. In 1982 she studied cost accounting and later procured the Masters degree in management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management located in Mumbai. She was a gold medallist for both cost accounting as well as management. She received a doctorate from Carleton University, Canada in 2014.
The year 1984 marked as the starting point of her successful career ahead. She joined ICICI bank, one of India’s leading bank for her internship as a management trainee. She continued to work there and look after sectors like monitoring, appraisal and project evaluation. In 1993, Kochhar was one of the core team members to set up this renowned bank. She received a promotion and was appointed as the assistant general manager in 1994. After only two years she was again promoted to head the Infrastructure Industry of ICICI bank which dealt with telecom, power and transportation. Again 1998 she was promoted to the General Manager post and headed the relationship management department handling over 200 top clients. The following year, she additionally handled the e-commerce division of the bank.
In 2000, the bank followed retail banking introduced by Kochhar and by 2001 she was appointed as the executive director and within five years she was promoted to the post of deputy managing director of ICICI bank. Till 2007 she handled international as well as corporate business and in 2007 she was appointed as the CFO and the joint managing director of ICICI bank.
In 2009 Kochhar was appointed as the CEO and the MD of the bank and has been actively involved with international as well as national projects. She is also the chairman of several other private sector banks and insurance companies and is active in several forums and organisations.
Kochhar is married to Deepak Kochhar who is an entrepreneur and businessman dealing with wind energy power. They had been schoolmates and the couple has two children, one daughter named Aarti and a son named Arjun. Kochhar received the most prestigious award called “Padma Bhushan” for her contributions to retail banking sector. This award is the highest award for an Indian civilian that proves her fame and worth. Kochhar is always seen on several popular magazines and is considered as a one of the most influential women in the world. She currently resides in Mumbai with her family.
