Claressa Shields is a native of Flint, Michigan.  Shields’ father, Bo Shields is also a boxer. Bo is the one who introduced Claressa to boxing and since then there was no turning back. Shields was always motivated by Laila Ali, boxer daughter of the legendary Muhammad Ali. Bo’s mother and Shields’ grandmother is the one who encouraged her to break any restrictions that may pose due to her gender, and that has been a cause for Shields to be adamant in pursuing a male dominated sports like boxing. Soon after in 2016, Universal Pictures acquired the rights to produce a film on her story. The famed director of the Oscar winning film “Moonlight”, Barry Jenkins, has been roped to write the screenplay of the film. Claressa Shields is also going to act in Susan Seidelman’s directorial venture “Punch Me”.
