Franchitti was born as George Dario Marino Franchitti on 1973 in Bathgate. He is Scottish by nationality. He attended the Stewart’s Melville College in Edinburgh and during this phase he started taking interest in karting. In 1984, when he was only a kid of 11 years, he won a Karting Championship. For the next year two years, Franchitti won the British Championship in the junior category and by the age of 15 years he won the senior title in Karting. He went on to win four championships for Formal Vauxhall Junior Championship in the year 1991. Franchitti entered the Formula Vauxhall Lotus Championship and won in the 1993. The same year he won the British Formula 3 Championship and in 1994 Franchitti was signed by AMG Racing. He has been associated with Hogan Racing, KOOL Greenand Andretti Green for racing competitions. Franchetti has been a 03 time winner for Indianapolis 500 and 4 time winner for IndyCar Championship series. In total he has won 33 poles and 31 Indycar wins.

Franchitti retired from racing in 2013 following a car crash during a race in Houston. He was severely injured and had no memory of the accident. He suffered memory loss due to the multiple skull injuries and even suffered from a spine and ankle fracture. After a whole month of treatment, Franchitti got better but was advised to quit racing which can have major health complications and even cost him his life. In other words he was forced to quit racing.



With his positive mindset, Franchitti lives his life to the fullest and currently coaches for Ganassi Racing. He does commentary for Formula E and is frequently seen on Goodwood TV programs on classic cars. Franchitti was married to actress Ashley Judd since 2001 but separated in 2013. In 2015 he married Eleanor Robb and already is a father to a baby girl named Sophia. His retirement days are peaceful and happtyb as he gets to spend time with his family in Scotland and London.
