He is noted to have played roles in some of the biggest films like ET : The Extra Terrestrial in which he played the character of Elliot Taylor and also later in Gangs of New York alongside Leonardo Dicaprio.
Soon after, he got the role in the Steven Spielberg film ET: Extra terrestrial which became a big hit and he became a recognisable actor at a young age. He later said that during the audition he thought of his pet dog which had died recently and gave an emotional performance.
After his initial childhood success he went back to San Antonio Texas to get away from all the limelight and resume his studies. He only returned to acting as an Adult and started out as the Norman Bates character in Psycho IV. This was followed by his most prominent role to date as the youngest brother in the film Legends of the fall where he starred opposite Brad Pitt.
