Colburn was born on March 10, 1963 in Redmond, California, United States. He grew up as a ski enthusiast and was an adventurer by heart. He has a siblings name Monte Colburn. He wanted his life to be exciting and new every moment and at the age of 22 years in 1985, he left for Kodiak, Alaska with his best friend with not more than $50 dollars and a tent and no experience. Colburn started his career as a greenhorn and in 1990 received the US Coast Guard licence and moved from the deck to the pilothouse. In 1992, he was designated as the Captain and received his Captain degree.     

His fishing career took off with the purchase of the fishing vessel Wizard. The Wizard was built way back in 1945 during World War II and Colburn gave a fresh coat of paint after purchasing it in 2005. Due to his zest and energy in his work, Colburn was approached by Discovery channel to participate as a captain and an expert for the show titled Deadliest Catch and After the Catch along with other participants like Sig Hansen, Johnathan Hillstrand and Elliott Neese. The show deals with the ordeals and dangers of catching Alaskan King crabs, snow crabs and bairdi crabs at the sea. The episodes are all packed with adventure and was often criticised for being aggressive. The show gained immense popularity and Colburn shot to fame. He has been into the crabbing industry for more than a decade and apart from his passion Colburn is also a chef, speaker on leadership and team building as well as an entrepreneur. Colburn is also the advocate of Safety and Sustainable Fisheries.

Colburn was married to Florence Colburn for the last twenty five years. He has two children, one boy named Caelan and a daughter named Sienna. The couple went through a rough patch and finally got divorced. Colburn still loves being at the sea, specially the Alaskan waters, and currently lives in Alaska. He has no regrets over his broken marriage and feels free of responsibilities as both his children have grown up and are independent. He however is in good term with his ex-wife.
