He began his career as an apprentice jockey at a very early age at the Evangeline downs race tracks in Louisiana. His first victory of his career was when he rode miss tavern and his first winning at the strakes was when he rode godbey in Maryland City. Till 1986 he had 55 wins and from 525 starts. In 1987 he earned the much coveted, much prestigious Eclipse Award as an outstanding apprentice jockey. In Maryland he was one of the most successful jockeys with countless winnings with an almost unbeatable record of being the best jockey in North America spanning over 2 years from 187 to 1989. He had won more races than any other jockey and he achieved the national title amongst the best 4 jockeys.



Kent Desormeaux started his earning with 5.1 million dollars and later he improved with 474 wins and 6.3 million dollars in his kitty. Later, in 1989 he was awarded with a third title for  setting a record  maximum of number of wins in a year and the number was 598 beating the previous record of 546.
