Kwan was born in Torrance, California in 1982. This 36 year old skater was born to immigrant parents from Hong Kong. She has two other siblings who took to ice hockey and figure skating which inspired her to take fancy towards the ice. She started taking skating lessons from the age of five years. She took lessons from the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club and was sponsored by the same. Kwan continued getting training at Lake Arrowhead. She attended the Soleado Elementary School at Palos Verdes, California but homeschooled from 1994 onwards when she was in the 8th grade.

In 1998, she attended the Rim Of The World High School and for a year she was associated with UCLA. In 2006, she started attending University of Denver and graduated with International Studies and minor in Political Science in 2009 from Josef Korbel School of International Studies. Kwan continued studying International Relations from Fletcher School Of Law and Diplomacy and received a degree from Tufts University in 2011. She is also a Doctorate in Humane Letters which was awarded by Southern Vermont College. Kwan is fluent in English and Cantonese.

Apart from having a strong academic background, Kwan is also an expert skater famous for her silent blades and clean programmes. She is an expert in difficult jumps and has the triple-toe-triple-toe signature technique. She was initially coached by Rafael Arutyunyan and later from Scott Williams with a short association with coach Frank Carroll. Tatiana Tarasova and Christopher Dean were her choreographers and she was the member of the skating club Los Angeles FSC. She participated in World Championships and won 5 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze. She went onto winning several other championships like Grand Prix and World Junior Championships and bagged a silver and bronze medal in the Olympics. Kwan retired in 2006. She is stated as the most decorated skater till date.

Kwan started dating Clay Pell, a lawyer, National Security incharge of the White House and former military officer since 2011 and married in 2013 in Rhode Island. Her wedding gown and make up was by famous fashion designer and make up artist from New York. Kwan signed $1 million contract with both Disney and Chevrolet individually with another year of extension. Other endorsements include famous brands like Campbell, Minute Maid, Kraft, Coca Cola, Chevrolet to name a few. She appeared in several TV shows and movies like The Simpsons, Family Guy, Reflection On Ice, Sabrina The Teenage Witch and lended her voice in Mulan III. In 1998 her autobiography Heart of Champion was released worldwide. She also appears in the video game Figure Skating. She has also served as a diplomat for Barack Obama and worked with the Vice President and Secretary. She currently lives with her husband in Rhode Island.
