During his school days, he was been identified by his Physical Education teacher Alan Watkinson. He started his athletic career at the age of 13 in London Youth games and ended up in ninth place. But on the very next year, he won first of five school titles. His first major title was in 2001 at European Athletics Junior Championship in 5000 meters. From 2005 he becomes a professional athlete as a long distance runner. In 2006 he becomes first and won his first gold medal in European Cross Country Championship in Italy. He was struggling and doing hard training to be number one in the world. In 2009 he won a gold medal in 3000m in European Indoor Championship in Turin with a world record timing. In 2010 he won gold in both 5000m and 10,000 m run in European Championship, Barcelona. It was a record.
