It seems as if the passion for gymnastics runs in the blood of her family, her parents being the gymnastic hotshots Valeri Liukin and Anna Kotchneva. After migrating to New Orleans and later on shifting to Texas in USA, it was his father who teamed up with Yevgeny Marchenko and initiated the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy in Texas. She completed her graduation from Spring Creek Academy, Texas but her further studies had to interrupted for her Olympic preparations.
Liukin began her training as a toddler itself who used to accompany her parents to the gym. Liukin first took part in a Junior Championship in 2002. A failure in her first attempt she showed enough conviction and went through the rest of the competition only to bag the 15th spot which eventually landed her in the US National Team. In the Junior Pan American Championship , 2002 she effectively contribute towards her team winning the gold. By 2003 she had already won gold in 3 out of 4 events. It was 2005 when she won her first senior National Championship on bars and beam. In 2006, she successfully defended her National Championship title. Things went the other way in 2007, when she suffered an ankle injury leading her to stay away from the game. She turned all the odds to stepping stones and went on to win the senior bars title for the third time. in 2009, she was also one of the contenders for the AAU Sullivan Award for her excellent performance i n 2008 Olympics.
Liukin hosts her own gym equipment produced by American Athletic Inc. Other corporate sponsors include Visa, AT&T, Longines etc. She is also the brand ambassador of Subway along with some other companies like Longines. She has effectively participated in relief missions for natural disasters.
