Camuto was born in New York City in June 936 and died at the age of 78 years. His father who was an artisan died when he was only two years old and his mother had to work as a seamstress to run the family. Camuto went to Seward Park High School in his hometown. He first started working at the age of 18 years and was initially in the mending of shoes department in I. Miller Departmental Store. He then for his good work was promoted to handle sales.



Camuto stepped into the area of shoe manufacturing in the 1960s and bagged a job in Sudbury Shoe Company. He proved his worth by positively contributing for one of the factories of the company. While onboard, Camuto came across Jack Fisher, a shoe industry professional and collaborated with him to start a business of shoe manufacturing for Japan which would be resourced from Brazil. In 1977, both the partners founded the company Nine West and combined modern designs with fair pricing which became an instant hit. Their factories were located in Brazil.

The company reached new heights in wholesaling and in 1993, Camuto was appointed as the CEO and the same year the company became public limited. In 1999, Jones Apparel Group bought Nine West at a price of $900 million! In 2001, along with his wife, Camuto started retail business and in 2002 started his own footwear brands. Subsequently he opened shops all across New York and other cities and licensed Jessica Simpson Collection in 2007.

Camuto was married to Lousie, a Swiss fashion model and former Miss Universe. He died at the age of 78 years of prostate cancer at his home in Greenwich. He was an active philanthropist and received several awards for his outstanding achievements in the fashion and footwear industry.
