At the age of her six, her parents separated in 1948 and four years later her mother succumbed to a heart attack on 7th March, 1952. In 1956 Aretha released some of her tracks as the album Songs of Faith. She had also done an album by the name of Aretha which was just after she signed with Columbia Records. That was in the year 1961. Thereafter she went on to sign up the Atlantic records in 1967 and this gave her immense commercial acclaim. Some of her songs that were released include “Respect”, “Spanish Harlem”, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and “Think”. She has achieved the Title “The Queen of Soul” at the end of 1960s. In 1980, she did two remarkable things. One was signing with Arista Records and secondly, she gave a performance before Queen Elizabeth at the Royal Albert Hall. However, in 1979, she lost her father and just after that she left the Atlantic Records. Her father was shot. But soon after, she experienced immense success in the film The Blues Brothers. Some of her albums that saw success include “Jump to It” and “Who’s Zoomin Who?”.
In 1998, she performed ‘Nessun Droma’ at Grammy Award Ceremony and gained an international acclaim for it. She won 18 Grammy Awards between the period of 1968-2008 for her famous singles such as: ‘Respect’, ‘Freeway of Love’, ‘Wonderful’, ‘Chain of Fools’, etc. In 2010, she achieved an honorary degree from Yale University. ‘A Woman Fallig Out of Love’ was one of the remarkable releases of Aretha as it was the first album that belonged to her own label and it was released in 2011. Aretha’s first album on her own label was ‘A Woman Falling Out of Love’ which was released in 2011. She also gave a performance at the inaugural ceremony of Barrack Obama. In 2012, she was inducted to the Gospel Music Association Gospel Music Hall of Fame. She also was inducted to the UK Music Hall o Fame in 2005. At present, she is 74 years old.
