Born on November 29, 1940, in Rochester, New York, Mangione’s love affair with music started at a very early age and he emerged as an anomaly and barrier breaker on the music scene which won him both accolades and criticism in equal measure. Under his father and brother’s encouragement and nurturing, he was exposed to famous jazz musicians like Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and Dizzy Gillespie alongside his music training at the Eastman School of Music. In 1965, he joined the trumpet chair of Woody Herman and Maynard Ferguson bands and later Art Blakey. He left the band in 1967 to form his own band to achieve spectacular success. He also started experimenting with the flugelhorn more, ultimately choosing it over the trumpet. He kept on scaling new height and won various prestigious awards. He went into hiatus from the public eye to resurface again in the late 90s and recorded for Chesky Records. In this phase, he got acclaim as the caricature on the Fox TV hit show, ‘King of The Hill’ which ran from 1997-2010.
