Early Life & Education:
Birdsong was born in a small town New Jersey named Mount Holly in 1939 on December 15th. The family moved to Philadelphia and then again back to New Jersey, finally settling in Camden. Birdsong grew up aspiring to become a nurse and pursed her education in the same from Pennsylvania. But with the stroke of luck, their long term family friend Patsy Holt, a professional singer and businesswoman, offered a place in the choir of The Ordettes. She was the oldest when she joined the group at the age of twenty.
Career:
Birdsong got her first professional break in 1961, when after singing in different choir groups of Philadelphia; she landed up with a contract with The Newtown Records. She was managed by Bernard Montague and her choir group Ordettes was renamed as The Blue Belles. Her first major commercial success was with the song Down the Aisle where she was credited and appreciated for her soprano vocal performed in the background.
Her group rose to the top of charts gradually and was popularly known as The Sweethearts of the Apollo for their reoccurring stage performances in the Apollo theatre since 1961. Birdsong is also popularly associated with Diana Ross and the Supremes. She replaced Florence Ballard in the Supremes and left and rejoined the group. She sang several solos and released numerous albums involving pop, rock, soul and R&B genres. In 1987, Birdsong sang for her last solo Dancing Room. She has also acted in a few movies.
Personal Life:
Birdsong now 76 years old is divorced and was previously married to Charles Hewlett. She had a son named David. Earlier in life, Birdsong was kidnapped in 1969 but managed to escape from a speeding car on the highway. Currently she is appointed as a Minister in Los Angeles since 2015.
