The initial phase of his wrestling career took place when he wrestled for the Iowa State University Cyclones for three years and won 2 NCAA titles. He continued a streak which broke when he lost to Larry Owings in his last match. He wrestled in the national freestyle circuit till 1976 and established a record of 67-4 and shifted to international matches and accomplished a record of 30-1 giving way for an overall record of 97-5. In 1967 Gable was barred from wrestling stating the reason as he being a freshman. He was the Champion of 1966-67 Midlands Tournament.
