The initial phase of his wrestling career took place when he wrestled for the Iowa State University Cyclones for three years and won 2 NCAA titles. He continued a streak which broke when he lost to Larry Owings in his last match. He wrestled in the national freestyle circuit till 1976 and established a record of 67-4 and shifted to international matches and accomplished a record of 30-1 giving way for an overall record of 97-5. In 1967 Gable was barred from wrestling stating the reason as he being a freshman. He was the Champion of 1966-67 Midlands Tournament. In 1968 he achieved a collegiate record of 37-0 and was the Big Eight Champion and was crowned the NCAA National Champion as well. He did not surrender any point in his Olympic finals in 1972 even though he was injured seriously.

Gable was titled the coach of his own university team in 1976 and went on setting milestones during his tenure. His team went on to win 25 consecutive Big Ten championships out of which 21 were within his tenure. Although Dan stepped down from the assistant coach position of the university team which was offered to him on a later part, he still continues to be with the team always.
