Gilmour was born on 1946 in Cambridgeshire, England, United Kingdom. His father was a Zoology lecturer and his mother a teacher and later a film editor at BBC. The family later moved to Grantchester Meadows. At the age of 11 years attended the Perse School, Cambridge. Gilmour attended the Cambridge Technical College and took up modern languages as a subject which he found very boring. During lunch breaks he and his friends practiced guitar and soon joined the blues rock band Jokers Wild in 1962.

Gilmour started her musical career with great struggle. He first moved to Spain, France and performed for Beatles. It was a daily bread-earning experience for him and once he had to be hospitalized because of malnutrition. He also worked as a driver and an assistant for fashion designer Ossie Clark in Paris. In 1967 he formed a band named Flower Band but failed miserably. Gilmour shifted back to London in 1967 and joined the band Pink Floyd and started gaining immense attention. In 1978 he released his solo albums like David Gilmour, On An Island, About Face and Rattle That Rock. Few of his noteworthy masterpieces are The Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall to name a few.
