Talese was born on 7 February, 1932 in Ocean City, New Jersey, United States. He has an Italian descent as both his parents were Italian immigrants. He completed his graduation in 1949 from Ocean City High School in 1949 and later procured a degree from the University of Alabama graduating in 1953. During his college years he took up journalism but landed up studying history. He became the member of Phi Sigma Kappa and was the editor of the campus newspaper for the sports department. He stood out with his writings which emphasized more on the losers or the unnoticed athletes rather than the winners.
Getting into journalism was merely by chance and not choice. While Talese enjoyed playing baseball to the extreme, he took up the supporting job of writing articles on behalf of his coach for the press. He went further to ornament the articles with his own style of writing in order to impress the coach and get extra playtime. But fate had its own secrets stored. Only after writing seven sports articles, Talese was offered a personal column to write and by the time he left for college he had already 311 stories under his name for the Sentinel-Ledger.
Talese credits his immense patients of listening to his mother who has guided and trained him to be patient. This habit led him to interview wide-ranging class of people spread across varied profession and instances. Soon after graduating, Talese shifted to New York City and bagged a job as a copyboy at New York Times. He came to office in Italian handcrafted suits and got his first article published without credit though on Times Square Anniversary followed by his next article on Atlantic City boardwalk in 1954. However in the same year he was drafted for US Army. After being transferred to the Office of Public Information, Talese worked for his own column Fort Nox Confidential for the newspaper Inside the Turret. He rejoined New York Times in 1956 and his career took off.
