Altidore is the fourth and the youngest son of a Haitian-American couple living in Livingston, New Jersey. He was born in 6 November, 1989. His parents later moved and raised him as a Jehovah’s Witness in Boca Raton, Florida. In his youth Altidore played for several small clubs and youth teams in South Florida, such as Boca Raton Juniors Soccer Club, Schulz Academy and Sunrise SC. He was trained with the Under-17 national team at the IMG Academy in Bradenton. When Altidore was just 16 year old, he made his professional debut playing for the New York Red Bulls in 2006. When he was offered a fee of $10 million dollars by Villarreal, he left New York Red Bulls mid-season in 2008 to join the Spanish football club.
