She is the younger of two other siblings who played hockey. Kerrigan is believed to have English-German-Irish ancestors. Kerrigan started taking fancy towards skating from the age of six years and only started lessons from the age of 8 years. Keeping up with the growing demands of the children to pursue the sports became difficult for Kerrigan’s father and he had to do three different jobs to continue enabling his children to pursue their dreams. He even worked as an ice resurface in exchange for skating tutorials for Nancy. Kerrigan graduated from the Stoneham High School and studied Business from Emmanuel College in Boston.

Kerrigan won her first medal at the age of nine years at Boston Open Championship. Theresa Martin was her trainer till she was 16 years of age.
