Papoose was born on 1978 in Brooklyn, New York. His real name is Shamele Mackie and he is of Liberian descent. Papoose’s rise in the public domain can be traced back to 1998 when he appeared on Kool G Rap’s Roots of Evil album. He then went on to release his first single “Thug Connection”/”Alphabetical Slaughter”, the following year. As stated when his record deal failed with Jive, he decided to produce and release his own albums. Nonetheless he succeeded in the endeavor. He started by making mixtapes, to make himself popular and relevant.
He presented one of those mixtape to DJ Kay Slay, who ultimately like Papoose music. He invited the later to his radio show and signed him to his Street Sweepers Entertainment label. This prompted Papoose to release mixtapes in a huge number, almost more than a dozen within the period of 2 years of 2004-2006.
